Bauxite mining
Global Alumina Corporation (GAC) operates a 690 km2 mining concession in the Boke region of Guinea with 400 million tonnes of bauxite mineral resources. Bauxite is transported by rail to Kamsar. GAC began bauxite exports in 2019 and will eventually produce 12 million tonnes of bauxite a year. GAC's operations are within the habitat of the Crticially Endangered Western chimpanzee. GAC has worked in collaboration with the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation, the International Finance Corporation, Companie du Bauxite de Guinee and the Government of Guinea to create and support the Moyen Bafing National Park to protect chimpanzees for the next 20 years as a biodiversity offset for their project.
