ARRC Task Force
Safeguarding Apes & Their Habitats
Apes in Africa and Asia face critical threats from large-scale development projects. The ARRC (Avoid, Reduce, Restore, and Conserve) Task Force is dedicated to protecting all ape species by avoiding, reducing, and restoring the negative impacts of large-scale development projects and contributing positively to ape conservation.

Any area where there are great apes is likely to be treated as critical habitat. Projects in such areas will be acceptable only in exceptional circumstances, and individuals from the IUCN/SSC PSG SGA must be involved in the development of any mitigation strategy. – PS 6 – GN73

Capacity Building
The Primate WATCH program was developed by the ARRC Task Force and aims to strengthen the capacity of primatologists from ape range countries, so that they are able to advise and interact with the private sector to improve the mitigation of their impacts on apes.

The ARRC Task Force has created and compiled numerous resources to improve knowledge of the threats faced by apes, increase awareness and application of best practices in ape conservation, and draw attention to specific large-scale development projects and related topics.
